What is Blog, and Why?

"By now, if you haven’t heard of Blogging, you must be in a coma or never use the internet". That was the answer given when a friend asked about mine and what was it all about. It did sound weird when someone living in IT-age known almost nothing about blog, especially when that someone is living his career finding resources from internet. So, there's a little explaining to be done here.

Blog is short for weblog, which simply means a website with new information whether it be personal, business, or what have you. It’s like an editorial and a journal all mixed together and available online for constant updates and submissions. It usually contains brief, discrete hunks of information called posts and each is uniquely identified by an anchor tag which is marked with a permanent link that can be referred to by others who wish to link to it. Blogs frequently include philosophical reflections, opinions on the Internet and social issues. In some cases blogs are used as daily diaries about people's personal lives, political views, or even as social commentaries. The truth of the matter is that blogs can be shaped into whatever you, the author, want them to be.

If you spend any time at all online these days, you simply can't avoid reading something about blogs as they are becoming increasingly more popular; and they are a great way of building an online presence without the need for any technical knowledge. According to Technorati, the search engine that keeps track of Weblogs, there is a new blog published every second and could be over 55 million blogs by now. Blogs are more permanent than posts to an online forum or to a discussion list, they are much more dynamic than the traditional style home pages. They are also more personal than standard journals, and definitely more public than diaries. A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary site. So, there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people, sharing their life, experiences, and thoughts with people they would never have met.

Blog is the best way to create a chain of communication, an alternative to disappointing static homepage with ability to filter and disseminate information to a widely dispersed audience while being outside the mainstream of mass media. It come in all shapes and subjects, a journals locked with password shared by few trusted friends, or they can be page after page of news and commentary shared with the world. It is a network of shared information and tested ideas. Running a business blog allows you the opportunity to tell existing customers about latest industry or product news and updates as well as attracting new customers by illustrating your expertise in a specific field. Blogging provides a simple and low-cost method for businesses to stay in touch with their customers, get free publicity and build a business brand.

Having your own blog offers unprecedented exposure to the world around you. It is where you can write your masterpiece(s) links to your favourite pages on the net. You can use blog to have your thoughts and feeling published for the world to see, or use it as marketing platform for your products and services. Bloggers are the newest and most popular ‘authentic’ voice on the internet. As technology continues to evolve, and the number of blogs continues to rise, it remains to be seen whether blogging will remain an effective business and marketing tool. But one thing is for certain – blogs are here to stay.
